Tribal style bellydance stems from a wonderfully new tradition which began on the West Coast. There is a long explanation of the evolution of
tribal style, which can be found at Fat Chance Bellydance's website. At Dancing Ember Studio, tribal style bellydance has been split up into levels to help dance students become
more proficient in the style.
Tribal Improvisation: Level 1: This is the first level of classes - appropriate for both aspiring newbie as well as seasoned dancer in other
styles who are interested in starting a new style. In this class we will concentrate on the basics of tribal improv - learning how to follow a leader,
learning some basic tribal vocabulary, and learning some basic cues associated with the vocabulary. At the end of this 6 week session, the student
should be able to follow simple tribal moves, such as the basics of ghawazee, arabic, and egyptian moves, as well as a couple variations of these moves.
They should also be comfortable with maya, taxseem, structural rolls, hand floreos, and snake arms.
Tribal Improvisation: Level 1A: This class is the continuation of Tribal 1, and should not be taken out of order. Tribal 1A continues the basic
moves of Tribal I, and begins to teach some simple combinations as well as tribal costuming. At the end of this 6 weeks, students should be very proficient
in all basic moves associated with tribal improvisation as well as with the cues associated with these moves. They should also be able to put together a
simple tribal costume for performance purposes.
Tribal Improvisation: Level 2: In this session, students focus on leading group improvisation. Students learn simple and more complex
combinations, and are introduced to dancing in a chorus and how to change formations. We will also continue to work on tribal
costuming as well as performance. At the end of this 6 weeks, students should start to feel more comfortable leading a group improvisation as well
as putting together simple movements as well as more complex combinations
Tribal Improvisation: Level 2A: This class is the continuation of Tribal 2, and should not be taken out of order. Here, we will continue to
work on leading and learn several more combinations common to tribal improvisational bellydance. We will continue to work on chorus moves, and how to
dance in an open chorus. At the end of this 6 weeks, students should feel VERY comfortable leading as well as following many basic and more complex
combinations common to tribal improv.
Tribal Improvisation: Level 3: This class is an advanced level class for those who have taken all previous levels of tribal improv. In this class
we will play with new combinations and more complex movements. This is a continuing class - so once you graduate from Tribal 2A, you can take this
class indefinitely as we will constantly add new moves and combinations as well as practice for performances. This class will also be given several
performance opportunities Tribal Fusion: Tribal Fusion is mostly a choreography class (though there is some improv as well) which can only be taken once the basics of tribal
improv have been mastered...because let's face it - how can you do a fusion of a style that you don't know? :-) So, first learn tribal style, and then learn
to fuse it with other styles. We will work with group choreographies as well as learning to how improvise together and as a soloist.
